8 INTERCONNECTED DOMAINS OF AGE FRIENDLY CITY

The WHO Age-friendly Cities framework developed with the eight interconnected domains that can help to identify and address barriers to the well-being and participation of older people.

COMMUNITY & HEALTH CARE
The aged care continuum includes various services like home care, palliative care, geriatric clinics, hospitals, adult day care centers, respite care, rehabilitation, and residential nursing home care.

Eg: Vayosmitham, Vayomithram, Nutritional support, Medical camps

TRANSPORTATION

Transport services should accommodate diverse mobility needs, with helpful drivers and elderly staff to assist, and maintain confidence as drivers age for a safe driving experience. Eg: Senior Taxi, Age friendly public transport

HOUSING

Age-friendly homes are ideal for elderly people, while obstacles like stairs and uneven flooring can pose challenges. Access to social and medical facilities is crucial. Eg: Emergency Alert System

SOCIAL PARTICIPATION

Social activities should cater to the diverse interests and needs of older people, offering accessible, affordable, and convenient options while raising awareness among seniors. Intergenerational activities benefit seniors by promoting social integration, fostering knowledge exchange, and fostering mutual enrichment. Eg: AKSAM series, Generation Games, Vayoprathibha

OUTDOOR SPACES & BUILDING

Urban environments can be suitable for elderly residents, but pollution, overcrowding, and noise levels pose safety risks. Clean, green spaces, age-friendly buildings, safe pedestrian crossings, and adequate rest areas can enhance community cohesion and social integration. Eg: Subhash Park, Changampuzha Park, Memory Cafe

RESPECT & SOCIAL INCLUSION

Respect for seniors is generally healthy, but negative preconceptions about ageing persist. Intergenerational interactions and early education about ageing are needed. Social and economic inclusion, including age-friendly initiatives and involving older people in decision-making, can boost their esteem and community engagement. Eg: RespectAge center, Samaya Bank

CIVIC PARTICIPATION & EMPLOYMENT
Older individuals can find fulfillment through voluntary activities, employment, age-friendly infrastructure, training, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Addressing age discrimination, encouraging civic participation, and involving older workers in decision-making ensures self-sufficiency. Eg:Handyman services
COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION

The media plays a crucial role in communicating information to the elderly, with older people receiving it through traditional media and personal contact. Access to information must be affordable and accessible. Affordable access to computers and adapted training can help build technological literacy. Eg: Swanthanam, Radio Kochi 90FM
