Sallapam

This project aims to bring happiness to the lives of older persons by early identifying risks to prevent ill-health, accidents, social isolation, and fostering intergenerational interactions. The project focuses on experiential outings, home visits, and counseling services to create a holistic approach towards the well-being of the elderly.
This innovative scheme to bring happiness to the elderly through intergenerational interactions. The project will encourage trained youth volunteers make regular phone calls to assigned senior with mutual consent and also to visit the homes if in need of services. Home visits help the elderly to open their minds and find solutions to many problems. They will be referred wherever counseling or other professional support is needed. Another component of this project is to help them go on an outing, tour, picnic, shopping or a walk. This will help them overcome the boredom of being alone at home and make new friends and networks.
Similarly, Sallapam team will also make regular visit to assigned retirement homes.

Objectives

a. Bring happiness and well-being to the lives of older persons in Kochi City.

b. Early identification of health risks to prevent illnesses and accidents.

c. Alleviate social isolation among the elderly through intergenerational interactions.

d. Provide opportunities for youth to understand the aging process and promote successful aging.

e. Foster a sustainable and age-friendly environment in Kochi City.

Project Components

a. Tele-connect

· Regular tele calls as wished by the senior person

· Reminders for important days etc

· Informing important news and information as required

b. Experiential Outings:

  • Assistance with shopping, tours, picnics, parties, etc.

  • Trained volunteers to facilitate and accompany older persons during outings.

c. Home Visits:

  • Volunteers spending meaningful time interacting with the elderly.

  • Identification of risks through observations and communication.

d. Counseling Services:

  • Professional counseling for emotional well-being.

  • Education on healthy aging and lifestyle choices.

Volunteer Recruitment and Training

a. Identification of "Age-Friendly Colleges" for student volunteers.

b. Training sessions on basics of aging, communication, and risk identification.

c. Collaboration with colleges to facilitate student involvement.
