Samaya Bank

This is a time bank concept initiated by Jai Bharat College, Perumbavoor. This encourages students and volunteers to take part in volunteering activities and get credit in the form of credit hours. It is expected that these credit hours of social work for older persons can be beneficial for their career in many ways. In the next step, we are also considering exchange of credit hours for care, getting care for a dear one and for self too in later life.

Our mission

The Samayabank project is dedicated to promoting active and graceful aging among the elderly population of Kerala. Through innovative programs and compassionate care, we aim to address the holistic needs of senior citizens, including health care, psychosocial support, economic protection, spiritual care, and a conducive environment. Our mission is to create a culture of mutual aid and respect, where volunteers and older adults come together to support each other, fostering a sense of community and well-being.

Our vision

Our vision is to create a society where aging is embraced as a natural and positive aspect of life. We envision a future where every older adult in Kerala has access to comprehensive wellness programs and compassionate care, enabling them to live with dignity and independence. Through the Samayabank project, we aspire to inspire a new generation of compassionate and responsible individuals who are committed to supporting and uplifting the elderly population.

The World Health Organization promotes the concept of active aging, encouraging individuals to maintain physical, social, and spiritual activities throughout their lifetime. This perspective is particularly relevant in Kerala, where demographic transitions are increasing the elderly population. By 2036, almost every fifth individual in the state is expected to be a senior citizen.

Addressing the needs of this growing demographic requires a holistic approach, combining health care, psychosocial and economic protection, spiritual care, and a suitable environment. The Samayabank project is a step in this direction. It is an effort to encourage graceful aging in our culture.

The "SAMAYA BANK" Community Geriatric Care project, a pioneering initiative by the Jai Bharath Institute for Community Development and Research Services, is a testament to the power of compassion and innovation. Launched in 2016 and further enhanced with an iOS/Android App in 2021, this project offers a comprehensive wellness program that transcends the conventional boundaries of health care.

The project's cornerstone is the "time bank" program, a unique concept where volunteers earn hours by assisting older adults. These hours are then recorded as credits within their social security accounts, fostering a culture of mutual aid and respect. The project primarily benefits individuals between 60 and above, living in both urban and rural areas, and is powered by the selfless service of trained student volunteers.

The beauty of this initiative lies not just in the care provided to older adults but also in the values it instills in the younger generation. It encourages students, NSS volunteers, and youth to spend quality time with older adults, thereby reducing the loneliness often experienced by older persons due to lack of family time. This voluntary participation is more than just a service; it is a learning, empathy, and growth journey.

Samayabank project is more than just a community service; it is a movement that inspires students to become compassionate, responsible individuals with a strong sense of duty. It is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and care, illuminating the path toward a society where everyone, regardless of age, can lead a fulfilling, dignified life.
