The School of Seniors

Welcome to the "School of Seniors" – Redefining Lifelong Learning and Active Aging

About the School of Seniors

The School of Seniors is a pioneering program that enriches the lives of senior citizens by offering lifelong learning opportunities, engaging activities, and anti-aging interventions. Developed by the Sports Management Research Institute (SMRI) in collaboration with CEDAC (Center of Excellence for Developing Age-Friendly Communities), this program is more than just an educational platform – it’s a way to redefine aging, empower older adults, and break ageist stereotypes.

Program Goals

Our goal is to create a community where older adults can continually grow, learn, and thrive. By fostering mental, physical, and emotional health through structured learning, hands-on experiences, and community engagement, the School of Seniors embraces the idea of the University of the Third Age, rooted in the WHO framework for age-friendly practices. In doing so, we contribute to a positive impact on the silver economy, enabling older adults to remain active contributors to society.

What We Offer

  • Core Subjects: Each year, participants select a new subject to explore from our comprehensive "Knowledge Bucket List," covering a wide range of fields to nurture intellectual curiosity and practical skills.

  • Language Learning: Expand horizons by learning new languages such as Sanskrit, French, Spanish, or German, which strengthens cognitive health and enhances cultural awareness.

  • Creative Arts: From creative writing to painting and music, our arts curriculum encourages self-expression and emotional well-being.

  • Super Specializations: Participants can delve deeper into niche areas like film-making, agriculture, and fashion design, supported by our dedicated course coordinators.

  • Sports & Play: Staying active is key! Our sports program focuses on promoting physical health while building camaraderie among seniors.

  • Internships & Volunteering: Opportunities for senior internships, volunteering, and entrepreneurship allow seniors to apply their learning, contribute to the community, and discover new career paths.

Our Partners

This initiative is jointly developed by SMRI and CEDAC under the Age-Friendly City initiative, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WHO framework is central to our design, fostering inclusivity and ensuring accessible, impactful learning experiences for older adults.

Impact & Lessons Learned

The School of Seniors has empowered countless seniors, sparking newfound joy, purpose, and self-confidence. As the program grows, we’re continually refining it with feedback from participants and communities, demonstrating that age is truly just a number when it comes to learning and contributing.
